Recently I was listening to a podcast for painters. The artist spoke of the tension between painting subjects that will sell, and painting subjects you yourself love.
"Paint what makes your heart hurt," she remembers one of her teachers prodding. Paint what you love, not what you think will sell.
Recently this has been reverberating inside my head. There are many things that make my heart hurt-- perhaps too many. But perhaps this is a good mantra to come back to when I am searching.
